This test is used to identify metastatic cancer of the prostate. Moderate elevations of total acid phosphatase have been observed with cancerous invasion of bone, myelocytic leukemia, Paget's disease (advanced), hyperparathyroidism with skeletal involvement, Gaucher's disease, and Niemann-Pick disease. Spurious elevations may occur in blood diseases and impaired kidney function.
