Levels of SHBG are under the control of estrogens and thyroid hormones, and are suppressed by androgens. These hormones dynamically control how much SHBG is made by the liver. Decreased levels of SHBG are frequently seen in women with facial hair, masculinization of females, obese postmenopausal women, and in women with diffuse hair loss. Increased levels may be present in cases of hyperthyroidism, testicular feminization, cirrhosis, male hypogonadism, and in women using oral contraceptives.
